How To Repair Your Search Engine Rankings

Repair your Search Engine Rankings

It’s essential for you to first establish whether your site has been hit by either the Panda or the Penguin algorithm. Penguin is the cause if you can see a drop in Google traffic on the 24th April 2012.

Penguin also penalizes the keywords with the most over-optimised exact match anchor text. We use the free back-link analysis tool at majesticseo.com to see which anchor text phrases are being used in anchor-text.

Back-Links

The exact match density for each keyword link should be lower than 5%. A Google friendly linking profile will have mostly URL related links, Brand related links and lots of different ‘junk’ links instead of keyword rich links.

Your registered company name or website name are good examples of what to use for Brand links. Your URL links should be a mixture of different permutations of your web address.

The weight given to links coming from the same Class C IP addresses have been greatly diminished, so focus on building new, high quality links from different servers. Aim to get inbound links from content related sites. Link from trusted sites with good Google PR.The trust score of the website carrying your link is vital. Google likes to see that your back-link pages have back-links themselves.

Using Link Networks

We’ve yet to see a top notch automated link network. Avoid all automated linking networks at all costs as in due course Google will find them and penalize the sites making use of them.

On-Page Requirements

On-page keyword density is important and for your main keyword or phrase, should not exceed 2 – 3%. A good way to raise the ‘quality’ of your own website is to hyperlink to an ‘authority’ site from your content. .gov and .edu sites are then best.

Content Quality

Your pages should all have high quality, well written unique content. Google like it when you link from within your site content using phrases in the text to other information pages on your own site or to external ‘authority’ domains.

Use of Images and Photo’s

A video will help to raise the time spent on your page, and pictures should be used to separate large blocks of text. Each image on your page should contain relevant alt text which needs to be different for each image on the page.

Your website content shouldn’t contain any spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors. Double-check whatever you write before publication as it will affect your ‘quality score’. Writing over 500 words on a page has been proven to give an SEO advantage and to give you a ranking advantage.

You should always write as much content as you need to so as to cover this issue, but 500 words is a good benchmark to strive for.

Make your content as interesting as possible. You’ll need your real visitors to find your content useful and to spend time absorbing it. If real people like your content then you will rise in the rankings. Word association is used by Google to understand your content and to rank it accordingly.

Best Use of Metatags

You could end up being penalized in the search results if your site contains duplicate description meta-tags. Each page should have meta-data unique to that page alone.

The click through rate from SERP’s to your site can be improved by writing more interesting meta description tags. Use your meta description tags to inspire more clicks and increase your sites user engagement metrics as well as helping you to climb online within Google SERPs.

While metatags are far less influential than they used to be previously, it is vitally important that you use them correctly to get the maximum benefit from them.

Bounce Rate

Google measures the page load speed of all the websites in its index. If your page loads too slowly then you will be demoted in Google’s results. The volume of visitors that don’t like what they find on your site and hit the back button is called the bounce rate.

It needs to be 55% or less for top Google rankings. Use YSlow for Firefox to assess the load speed for your pages.

Average Visitor

Increasing the quantity of pages that your visitors look at is a good way of boosting the quality score for your website content. Getting your targeted traffic to click through to a second or third page on your site is good for your search engine rankings. Orphan link pages are easily improved by building a good link into that page. Google mistrust links from pages with no links, so create a few and you will get maximum benefit from your links.

It’s not that Google mistrusts orphan links…. it doesn’t count them at all (to downgrade all those articles, published just for SEO), so any article or directory listing page or whatever needs to have backlinks, regardless of how strong the home page might be.
